Oven Hot Dogs aka Chili Cheese Coney Casserole

You know I always read blogs saying..."the pictures don't do this justice"...."this tasted so much better than my pictures look"...Well I'm not going to lie, this looks like slop!  And in the pictures, it looks like slop!  But it's some good tasting slop!  And very sloppy to eat, better wear a bib...or eat with a fork and knife.

My blogger friend favorite hooker Bunny, turned me on to this recipe when she wrote a post about all the recipes she had tried from Pinterest.  This was one of the recipes...I'm not really sure why I tried this recipe...I mean I'm not really a fan of stuff on my hot dogs.  I like them plain...just a wiener(grilled 'till it's black) and a bun...nothing else!  But this recipe really intrigued me...I've never heard of anyone cooking hot dogs bun and all in the oven.  So I had to try it.

The first night I made it...Michael got home from work just in time to see me spooning the last of the canned chili over to of the hot dogs...he was like "WTF???"  I was like "it's chili cheese coney casserole".  Fast thinking...huh?  And surprisingly it turned out good...so this is my second time making them.  So you know it's YUMMMMMMY!!!!

Now this is really going to sound odd, but first you spread the inside of your buns with mayo...Weird...I know, but just do it!  I think that came out wrong...not your buns...THE HOT DOG BUNS.

Then place the buns into a foil lined 9x13-inch size baking dish...It's the perfect size for 8 hot dogs...cram them in!  Spoon a little pickle relish and mustard into the buns if you like...then a wiener in each bun.

Spoon chili over top of each dog...It doesn't have to be perfect.

Then top with the cheese and onions...cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

Oven Hot Dogs
adapted from In the Wabe

8 hot dogs
8 hot dog buns
mayonnaise
mustard
pickle relish
1 can of chili
shredded cheddar cheese
diced onion

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Spread mayonnaise on the inside of each bun.  Add relish and mustard to the buns.  Place a hot dog in each bun and cram into a 9x13-inch baking dish.  Top the hot dogs with chili, cheese, and diced onion.  Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.  Remove the hot dogs for serving with a spatula.

I think this would be an awesome thing to serve at a Super Bowl party too!

  1. I have no doubt that this tasted good. I think its a cool way to serve up chili dogs. I know my family would enjoy it...I would eat it up, and takes Tums later.

    Very cool.

  2. Thanks for giving me props, hooker! I made these Monday night. Had them for lunch leftovers yesterday. They warm up well. As I told you, I don't think I will ever make hot dogs another way again.

  8. That's the best looking slop I've seen in ages, Bo! I bet it was so indulging and good. I'm not one for much on my hot dog either, but every now and then a chili dog is needed.. this would definitely satisfy that craving!

  9. Sounds like a good kid friendly idea. Do the buns get soggy?

  13. Robin, I am hijacking your response since I have made this dish many times. The buns do not get soggy, but they are soft. Also, I want to mention that you can "lighten" this dish (as I have done) by using whole wheat buns, turkey hot dogs, light mayo, turkey chili and reduced fat cheese. It's not quite as indulgent and tasty but it makes you feel a little better about eating it! LOL

  15. You're talking to someone who thinks hot dogs are made for sauerkraut and mustard. Period. Nothing else. And never mayo. But then you show all that melty cheese and my knees grow weak.

  17. Oh my goodness, I laughed so hard reading this post. I am sure when my husband comes home he will say the same thing if I made these....but they look sooooo goood. I completely agree, this is perfect superbowl food. Or if you didn't have a reason to have a party I would make something up just so I could make these! I actually think the pictures look scrumptious!

  19. This recipe is delicious! I had someone enter a recipe similar to this one in a contest I host at the Iowa State Fair. All of the judges loved it.

  21. How easy is that? I will make this for sure! Your Sriracha Ranch dip with Okra was a huge hit at our Fish Fry the other night! What would I do without that magnificent hot sauce?

  22. Oh ****ing great, now I have mayonnaise all over my ass.... (ha ha)

I've never ever heard of this preparation ever but if you swear by it I'd be lying to say I don't want to try this. My kids love chili cheese coneys so I have to make this. (That's my excuse, I'm doing it for the kids, lol)

  23. PS: Smart move on lining the dish with foil.

  24. Doesn't look too bad, my friend! At least you managed to get your subject on focus, unlike others (uhm, meaning myself). And it does sound good. Not for my silhouette, mind you. And my bf would faint by the sheer smell of it, I guess (he's in a get-slim-phase, so I don't have permission to use fat or sugar anywhere... still found some tasty recipes, though). This is what I would currently love to eat, half-hidden in the basement as not to warn him off ;-)) Best to you, and keep up those wieners lol

  25. My mom (and my 87-year old aunt) love hot dogs and I will surprise them with this! AWESOME! (and so easy!)

  26. As mentioned above this would be awesome at a Super Bowl party. Unfortunately all my friends who would eat this we left behind in Denver. How about a variation where you bury the dogs in cheese grits? A little hot sauce and it's party time!!

  27. What a great way to serve hot dogs! My mom would love these...she's the one who like a Chicago dog or tons of stuff on her hot dog. Me on the other hand have never been a fan of hot dogs of any kind. I do like brats though!

  28. The bread doesn't burn baking for 45 minutes? Wow, this would be a great super bowl party food! I love coney island dogs.

    1. Mimi, The bread actually gets soft...I think it's because of the mayo.
