I know this might sound a little strange to put an avocado in a milkshake, but these are actually very popular in Asia and South America. I had not tried one until a couple of weeks ago. It was so delicious, creamy, and very refreshing. The avocado adds a very subtle flavor. I actually liked them so much, I've drank one almost everyday since I first tried it. These are perfect for all the warm weather we've been having.
Avocado Shake
1 ripe avocado
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
2 cups ice cubes
In a blender combine all the ingredients and blend until smooth. Divide into two glasses.
I just can't imagine the taste...
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I never would have thought of this!
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm,
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to try this today!
Hey,
ReplyDeleteAvocado shake looks awesome. It isn't strange at all since I have been seeing plenty of smoothies and shakes made with avocado in many blogs.
I have some ripe avocado at home and will give this version a try.
Chrissy,
ReplyDeleteI don't really know how to describe the flavor...but its good.
Michael,
You should try it.
Bob,
I think you will like it.
Cool Lassi(e),
ReplyDeleteThanks...I've heard a lot of people talk about them on blogs...that why I wanted to try it. Try it...It is really good.
It sounds good but just how many calories are we talking about here?
ReplyDeleteOkay I did the research myself:
1 avocado = 276/28
1 cup milk = 160/8
1/2 s&c milk = 491/13.5 (is the highest calorie, highest fat food ever?)
per serving = 464/25
Hey Bo,
ReplyDeleteAvacado shake looks really cool!! got some ripe one at home..soon I'll try it out!
Sean,
ReplyDeleteIt is a milk shake...it is not suppose to be healthy...just to compare a Burger King medium vanilla milk shake has 560 calories and 21 grams of fat.
Jagruti,
ReplyDeleteThanks! Let me know how you like it.
whoa, avocados are healthy- they have good fat in them... probably better than a regular milk shake. Granted the sweetened condensed doesn't help... then again this is more of a treat than a regular thing... lol
ReplyDeleteChrissy,
ReplyDeleteI know...I actually thought these were sort of healthy...I bet if we knew the calorie count of everything we ate...we would make much better food choices...avocados have healthy fats...plus vitamins and minerals...I feel better drinking this than a regular milkshake.
wow.....I always leave your blog with the best ideas...l,ove it;)
ReplyDeleteSteven,
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I really can't even imagine this but, love avocados so it must work! I'll have to give it a try as it looks very soothing and delicious! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWould ice cream work instead of SCM?
ReplyDeleteTHIS must be delicious!Great alternative after Easter cakes and eggs and meat:D thank you for visiting me;)
ReplyDeleteMy son loves smoothies and I would love to try this one for him; I think he would adore it! He just lost at 35 pounds and he needs the extra calories!
ReplyDeletePS My brazilian friend used to rave about it
yum- instead of the sweet milk try using VERY ripe bananas- that is how we make ours- Also you can try adding vanilla soya milk instead of whole milk-
ReplyDeleteBo, do u think substituting the condensed w/ greek yogurt spiked w/stevia/agave would work? the agave could thin it out as well as sweeten it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic idea! I bet it tastes great!
ReplyDeleteI love avocado shakes!! It has a bitter aftertaste, but complements well with the milk. Avocado shake is popular in the Philippines. If you dont feel like making a smoothie, you may slice several chunks of it, put it in a bowl, add some milk, ice and sugar, and eat it as it is. Actually some Pinoys find guacamole weird compare to making it as shake. lol
ReplyDeleteGood idea ! Your Avocado shake look creamy and nice.
ReplyDeletehad that yesterday!!
ReplyDeletedo you take your photos during the arvo? love the lighting hey :)
Okay Bo, if you tried it I will! Serious I love avocado and it is so creamy it must be good!
ReplyDeleteI might even go crazy and create some new recipe from your inspiration, so Thanks!
Flavor sounds good. Lemme have it then i would tell more on it.
ReplyDeleteMy mom actually tricked me into drinking this. I love it and we have our own avocado tree sos that's very convenient
ReplyDeleteHey Bo
ReplyDeleteMay be the dish is very high in calorie but perfect for growing kids.
It is very tasty Indeed, try to get some dark palm sugar (gula melaka) and make a thick syrup to go with it! :)
ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly agree that avocado shakes are the best! A friend introduced them to me years ago and we love them. Incidentally I found your blog through a commenter on mine who said she has tried many of your recipes and they have all been hits. Of course I had to check it out! Can't wait to look around!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds yummy!
ReplyDeletePam,
ReplyDeleteTry it...Its different...but good!
Frank, "my brother"
Only if you use pistachio...to keep it green!...lol...no vanilla would be fine.
Dotblogg,
Thanks!
Taseofbeirut,
35lbs...wow!...I just want to lose 5lbs!
Lady Ren,
Your way is much healthier.
Chrissy,
You wouldn't even have to add the yogurt...just avocado, milk, ice, and some agave...but the yogurt wouldn't be a bad addition.
Sook,
Thanks!
Mhel,
So they eat it like a soup...I'll have to try that.
Sonia,
Thanks!
Ann,
Me too!...All the outdoor pictures were taken in the evening close to sunset...about 6:00-7:00 pm.
Chef E,
Its worth trying.
Dorthy,

Big Gyal,
I'm jealous...I wish I have a avocado tree.

Diana,
Thanks! It is yummy!
Yeah, my favourite drink...so refreshing and delicious. I must make again.
ReplyDeleteTo be perfectly honest, I have tried those before and they taste great. At first, I was hesitant, but my wife convinced me. Avocados are great by themselves, however, I would never have thought of putting them in a milkshake!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is a must try to be sure! Very nice!
ReplyDeleteMaryMoh,
ReplyDeleteMy favorite too.
Current Health Topics,
I was hesitant too, but I'll try anything...I'm glad I did.
Danielle,

Yummy! I love it!
ReplyDeleteYou should try lotus nut shake too, beautifully yummy :)
lehuutai,
ReplyDeleteI will have to see if I can find lotus nuts.
thats it? Wow...super easy and avacado is soo good for you. Any suggestions rather than the sweetened condensed milk...more lo cal?
ReplyDeleteTrish,
ReplyDeleteI have seen some recipes that just called for a couple tbs of sugar, but others suggested a ripe banana or agave nectar.
Oh I have a friend who loves these. And we have a local boba (pearl tea/bubble tea) store that has avacado smoothie with pearls. I can't say I'm a fan (yet) but perhaps someday!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds fantastic! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDaily Chef,
ReplyDeleteNext time I'm going to try it with some tapioca pearls.
Erika,
Try it!
Sounds good and healthy. Must try this one day.
ReplyDeleteHello Bo!
ReplyDeleteBrussels calling!

MMMMM,...

ReplyDeletewow this looks so delicious and yummy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe.
olga.
This looks to me like a beautiful thing. Never heard of using an avocado like this. I only use them for salads and of course sandwiches. I'm loving your blog overall. I'm following now. One of these days, come to see my sandwich page. I'd be honored to have you as a follower. Keri (a.k.a. Sam) p.s. we're neighbors, I'm over here in GA..

ReplyDeleteThis looks and sounds so, so unique, Bo!
ReplyDelete-Dean
Banu,
ReplyDeleteWell there has been a big debate in the comments over weather or not this is really healthy...but its probably a better choice than a regular milkshake.
Dean,
Its really good...I hope you try it.
I am seriously adding this to my list of drinks to make this year. I've heard of it before, and I know that avocado takes on the flavor of the accompanying ingredients. I like that this version doesn't have ice cream.
ReplyDeleteChristina,
ReplyDeleteActually you can taste the avocado...you need to try it.
This drink is popular in Colombia! Your looks beautiful, Bob!
ReplyDeleteErica,
ReplyDeleteThanks! I wonder why they are not popular here in the US?
This looks and sounds fantastic Bo. What a great idea! I am definately trying this soon.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
Way to stand your ground on the calorie/fat count thing with Sean, Bo! ;-)
ReplyDeleteCatherine,
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Penny,
I'm actually glad he pointed it out...I had no idea they had so many calories.
I'd imagine this one being quite calorific, but who cares pass me two as it looks delicious, buddy. well done on this yummy smooth drink. :D
ReplyDeleteRico,
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think its worth all those calories.
We are gonna try this tomorrow. I have had the stuff sitting on the counter for a couple of days but the ice cubes melted and the milk went bad ;) Just kidding
ReplyDeleteRico,
ReplyDeleteIts worth every calorie!
